v1.70: Fabric Studio
What's New
Fabric Studio: A new workspace for people who don't write code. Your projects and the chats inside them take the place of the file tree and terminal.
One-Click Local Models: Run a model entirely on your own computer. Fabric checks your hardware, suggests one that fits, and downloads, verifies and starts it in a single click — nothing leaves your machine.
Built-In Office Skills: Fabric now reads, creates and edits Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files with nothing to install, on Mac and Windows.
Use Fabric Without an Account: Skip sign-in and use Fabric with just your own API keys or a local model. Hosted models, phone and remote access unlock whenever you sign in.
Across All Your Devices
One Queue for Every Chat: Phone, desktop and web share a single queue per chat, so messages run in order, Send delivers instantly everywhere, and a stop or reload on one device no longer leaves another stuck.
Edit and Regenerate Anywhere: Edit and Regenerate now work from the phone and web, and prompts you type on the Mac appear live on your phone.
One Permission Mode Per Chat: Every device follows the same permission mode for a chat, and new chats start in the mode you last picked.
Browse Your Computers From Your Phone: Pick one of your computers to browse its chats and search their titles and message text.
Replies Keep Running on the Phone: Chats keep generating in the background, a notification that your reply is ready brings you back, and drafts stay in each chat when you switch away and back.
Dictation and Photos on iPhone: The chat box mic dictates a prompt, and pasting a photo into a chat works.
New Chat From the Pencil: The pencil button starts a new chat on any phone; on a computer, long-press does the same.
Improvements
Switch Accounts Instantly: Switch accounts from a dropdown in Settings instead of logging out.
Beta Updates for Everyone: Beta updates are now open to everyone.
Smarter Code Map: The Code Map gets its own settings tab — naming model, a daily background limit and automatic builds — with a progress bar you can stop and resume, and updates that redo only code that changed. It also no longer summarizes every file in the background, which could burn through your rate limit.
Parallel Subagents: A new setting chooses how many subagents run at once, from 1 to 16; the rest wait in a queue.
Simpler Settings: Skills, MCP, Hooks, Terminal and Benchmark are tucked under one Advanced section, and the Files and Terminal panels are now optional.
App Notifications: Installed apps can notify you with a card while you're in Fabric or a system notification when you're away, plus a count on the app until you open it.
Safe Quitting: Quitting while a reply or routine is running now asks first and lists exactly what would be interrupted.
Stepped Questions: Questions asked several at a time now step through with Next and Back, and the auto-answer countdown links to turn auto-answer off or back on.
Clickable File Names: File names in chat replies open the file at the right line.
Multi-Repo Source Control: Source Control works in a folder that holds several repositories, with a picker to switch between them.
Name New Files Inline: New File and New Folder are named right in the file tree.
Instant Slash Commands: Custom slash commands appear in the / menu as soon as you add or edit them — no restart needed.
Searchable Skills: With more than 20 skills installed, the model searches them instead of listing every one.
Remembered Scroll Position: Chat and Markdown previews keep their scroll position when you switch tabs.
Less Background Activity: Fabric no longer runs any built-in routine automatically in the background, and the automatic chat cleanup timer and file tag preprocessing setting are gone.
Email Support: Error reports now point you to [email protected].
Bug Fixes
Fabric works on Intel Macs again, after several core components failed to load.
Multi-hour agent runs no longer exhaust memory, runaway command output is stopped, and a window whose display crashes reloads instead of staying blank.
Long unattended tasks stay on track through chat summaries and dropped connections, and a model that goes quiet mid-task is checked on.
A reply cut off mid-sentence continues cleanly instead of starting over, and a half-finished action is re-issued rather than run half-written.
Stray markup no longer appears in replies, and responses are no longer garbled or doubled.
Turns using subagents no longer fail unexpectedly or lose the end of their answer, and a subagent's tab shows its work like a normal chat.
A local model working through a long prompt is no longer cut off as stalled, and a turn that's truly stuck gives up after a few minutes.
The AI can no longer spend minutes thinking on a single step.
Typing or dictating no longer sends your message on every keystroke after an automatic send.
Pressing Escape to close Settings or other panels no longer stops a running chat.
Send now works while Fabric is waiting on a background task.
Typing in the chat box is fast again, New Chat's first message goes to the new chat, and scrolling up during a reply no longer snaps you back down.
A malformed question card no longer crashes the chat.
Text that starts with / now sends unless it names a command.
Signing out fully disconnects Fabric's hosted models and ends any reply in progress with a clear notice.
Without an account, onboarding offers Sign in or Continue instead of an error about a missing key, and Settings flags a missing Fabric key instead of showing Connected.
The Mac dictation hotkey no longer stops working after a day of use.
The built-in browser no longer reloads endlessly on OneDrive and SharePoint links.
On Windows, task test runs now work, and onboarding finds your profile in Windows locations.
Chat history indexing no longer maxes out your CPU — it runs quietly and pauses while a reply streams.
Copies of failed requests kept for troubleshooting now stay private on your device.
Code Map and code search work in installed builds again, without getting stuck building or asking you to review it after every launch.
Each project keeps its own terminals, Copy to Prompt works in every shell, and the Files panel keeps updating while an agent works in the background.
A hook that exits without reading its input no longer crashes the app.
Images are no longer mislabeled as the wrong file type when sent through some providers.
The light theme is readable throughout — code highlighting, table borders, scrollbars, copy buttons and slash-command badges no longer fade into the background.
Phone and Web Fixes
A chat with one very large message no longer opens blank, and usage totals now match everywhere.
A turn from the phone no longer leaves a duplicate reply on the desktop.
Replies on the phone display smoothly without the screen jumping, and an expired session asks you to sign in again instead of opening a chat that can't reach your computers.
Each account's chats, computers and ambient recordings stay separate, and ambient audio is deleted once transcribed.
